Face to Face Communication may be defined as communication when the communicator transmits his message in person to the receiver in person verbally and even non-verbally. Thus face to face communication is both verbal and non-verbal.
All face communication is oral, but all oral communication need not to be face to face For E.g. the telephonic talk is oral but not face to face.

Written communication is verbal communication. It accounts for more than 85% of the communication that takes place in any business organization.
Written communication is used for many purposes. Many types of documents are required for official work. Letters, circulars, memos, notices, reports and minutes are constantly prepared and exchanged in and between organizations. Each has a format and layout which are fixed by custom.
Written communication needs to be presented in an orderly fashion, with a proper format. Other features are correctness of message, concise expression, consideration and courtesy. The message must be clear and complete in order to be fully understood by the receiver.

Oral communication is the form of verbal communication, which conveys the message from the sender to the receiver through the stated word. In other words, communication with the help of spoken words is called oral communication. It is essential at every stage of our social and business dealings.
Oral communication is a two-way process, as it provides a clear insight about the meaning to the message, and the message transmitted and the feedback is immediate. We communicate orally with our family, friends, in meetings, committees, conferences, over the telephone, radio, public, etc.

Grapevine is an informal communication, unorganized and unofficial channel of communication in an organization. When the formal channels fail or do not work properly and some over-smart people spread rumors, false and irresponsible statement or half-truths in all the directions. It is called the communication on the grapevine channel.
Grapevine communication, information spreads very fast in all directions as this vine of grapes spreads. Grapevine means a source of secret information. It is kind of horizontal communication, which takes place within a group, between persons of equal status. Grapevine is an integral part of the communication system in an organization. This is the highly sensitive channel as it is a great boon as well as a curse.

Consensus means as common agreement of opinion, which is arrived at, after Mutual Consultation. 'A Dictionary of Management' defines consensus as “General agreement by a number of people, especially on fundamental principles by people who had been differing views on related matters.”
Consensus communication is based on mutual consideration and respect on the part of the members of a group. It involves consultation. Consensus is arrived at after the discussion of a problem and after careful consideration of possible solution to the problem. Once a final decision is taken, and all the parties agree to stand by it, consensus is said to have been reached.
Consensus communication is very necessary within the organization to present an image of unity and solidarity to the public outside the organization.

Communication of ideas and messages between persons enjoying the same or equal status in the hierarchy of an organization is known as horizontal communication.
In other words, the cross Communication between two persons of equal status (workers, peons, students, teachers, managers, clerks, directors) without disturbing their juniors or seniors is called horizontal communication.
Vertical communication is also called as two-way communication because in this communication, the management can give directives and send information downward and in addition receive periodic information from subordinates about the effectiveness of their directives and the progress of the organization.
Vertical communication, in other words, means upward and downward communication. In this channel of communication, messages do not jump directly from the top to the bottom or vice versa, but they come through a correct channel. So clearly it provides a proper channel to management to transmit ideas, information, instructions to the employees and enables to communicate their responses upwards. When a communication flows from a higher level of authority to a lower level of authority. It is called a downward communication. When it flows from lower level of authority to be higher level of authority is called an upward communication.
